School Readiness Summit

Overview

In 2015, Kentucky received a grant from the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices which provided tools and opportunities for Superintendents and the Early Care and Education community. The Superintendents Toolbox and the School Readiness Summit were generated from the initial grant, Kentucky created the School Readiness Summit to engage Superintendents and the Early Care and Education community by providing an opportunity for collaboration and action planning.

Each participating district developed a Summit team. Summit team members could include: District representatives, Child Care representatives, Head Start representatives, Community Early Childhood Council representatives and community partners. Most teams were led by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

During the Summit, teams collaborated to create 30, 60, 90 Day Action Plans to increase school readiness.

In 2019 The Kentucky Governor’s Office of Early Childhood secured grant funding provided by The Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Child Care and the Department of Education, Office of Health Learning, through the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

This year’s School Readiness Summit focused on:

  • strengthening Kentucky’s comprehensive early care and education system, to support all young children and their caregivers.
  • building on existing partnerships and relationships to improve the leveraging of resources across programs and agencies.
  • providing information and resources to local leaders with regard to programs, communications, outreach to families, and engagement strategies, and to ensure children receive timely, effective, and high quality services that are responsive to their needs.

Number of school districts that have participated and have become school readiness trendsetters: 70
